Animal care

Every animal deserves kindness, care and the chance to thrive. WISCA works across Waiheke Island to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome animals in need, while also supporting owners through desexing programmes, education and practical assistance.

By caring for animals and the people who love them, we're helping build a more compassionate community for all.

What our animal advocate does

Our Animal Advocate is a voice for animals on Waiheke Island, working to promote their welfare and support responsible pet ownership throughout the community.

They:

  • microchip pets and register them with the New Zealand Companion Animal Register (NZCAR)

  • update and maintain microchip registration details

  • promote responsible pet ownership, including the benefits of desexing

  • provide advice and support for pet behavioural issues

  • assess injured animals and refer them to a veterinarian or animal rescue organisation

  • assist with rehoming pets when owners are no longer able to care for them

  • work closely with volunteers and foster carers to support animals in need.

Community education

Education is an important part of WISCA's mission to improve animal welfare on Waiheke Island. By sharing knowledge and encouraging responsible pet ownership, our Animal Advocate helps create a safer, healthier future for animals and the people who care for them.

This includes:

  • delivering engaging talks and educational programmes to schools and early learning centres

  • promoting responsible pet ownership, including the importance of desexing, microchipping and preventative healthcare

  • raising awareness of animal welfare standards and best-practice care

  • providing advice and resources to help owners make informed decisions about their pets' health, behaviour and wellbeing.
