What we do

We work alongside our community to improve the lives of animals through education, advocacy, practical support, collaboration with other animal welfare organisations and by removing barriers to receiving veterinary care.

We believe the best outcomes for animals begin with supporting the people who care for them. By responding to the needs of our community, we create lasting improvements in animal welfare and contribute to a healthier, more compassionate Waiheke.

Who we are

The Waiheke Island Society for the Care of Animals (WISCA) is an independent, community-based charity dedicated to protecting and improving the welfare of animals on Waiheke Island.

Originally established in 1971 as the Waiheke SPCA, we became WISCA in 2017 so that decisions, donations and resources could remain on the island, supporting the animals and people of our own community.

Today, WISCA provides animal welfare services including rescue and rehabilitation, rehoming, desexing and microchipping programmes, community education, and support for pet owners experiencing hardship.

Powered by a passionate team of staff and volunteers, and funded through donations, fundraising and our community op shop, we are committed to ensuring every animal on Waiheke has the opportunity to live a safe, healthy and cared-for life.

How we helped in 2025

  • Animals entering shelter care - 32 animals

  • Total animals desexed with WISCA - 59 animals

  • Pets microchipped and registered - 52 pets

  • Prescriptions/consults covered by WISCA - 129 prescriptions

  • Cats rehomed - 18 cats

  • Dogs rehomed - 12 dogs

  • Cats placed in foster homes - 9 cats

  • Families assisted with vet care costs - 32 families

  • Animal welfare consultations and support enquiries - 360 hours

  • Education articles and visits - 700 hours

  • Food supplied to Onetangi Roosters - 1,070 kg

  • Guidance on pet behavioural issues and animal welfare concerns
