Dog rules
There are rules for dogs in place to help keep dogs, people and wildlife safe.
Registration and microchipping
Under the Dog Control Act 1996, all dogs in Auckland must:
be registered every year
wear a registration tag at all times. If you lose the tag, you can ask for a replacement
be microchipped within two months of their first registration.
You can be fined if do not register your dog.
Visit Dog registration rules for more information.
We can help
We can microchip and register your pet for free through a grant from the Companion Animal Trust.
Rules for dogs in public places
Dogs must be kept on a leash in public parks, streets, playgrounds and reserves unless the area is designated as an ‘off-leash’ dog exercise area.
Exemptions to the rules
You may be able to take your dog off leash in areas where:
signs state dogs are allowed, and you follow conditions for entry
you have permission to do so from:
Auckland Council, or
the person in charge.
Fines
You can be fined if you do not keep your dog on a leash in a public place.
Rules for walking dogs at our parks and beaches
You must:
always keep your dog under control
carry a lead with you
clean up after your dog.
'Under control' means:
your dog listens and responds to you straight away when they are off leash, or
you keep your dog on a leash when needed.
If you don’t think your dog will respond to you, you should always keep them on a leash - especially around kids, other animals and wildlife.
Visit Rules for dogs in public places for more information.
